Familiarizing with the Different Types of
Warts
Warts are considered to be the most common skin disease in the world. They are best described as
an abnormal thickening of the skin and can also appear as benign skin tumors. Warts are found in almost any part of
the body but it commonly appears in the hands, feet and the genitals.
Superstition dictates that the primary source of warts is toads but in reality this irregular
production of skin cells is caused by a certain group of virus called the papilloma virus. This particular virus
has over 50 types which correspond to different types of warts. Some are even traced to some variety of cancers
like cervical cancer.
Because it is viral in origin, warts are very contagious and can easily transfer through skin to
skin contact. No person is safe from the different types of warts for it affects anyone of any age everywhere.
Many different types of warts have been identified and they are usually found in a
certain part of the body. Some of the most common types are:
1. Common warts or Verruca Vulgaris: These are seen as raised bumps. They
have a rough surface and are commonly found in the hands, elbows and knees.
2. Flat warts: These are characterized as flat and smooth and are commonly
found in the hands, knees and face.
3. Plantal warts: Of the different types of warts, this is said to be the
most painful. They are found in the soles of the feet and are usually mistaken as corns and calluses. It comes in
many sizes and is usually characterized with red and block dots which are actually blood vessels. Unlike other
warts, they have the tendency to grow into the skin rather outside.
4. Genital warts: This is the most serious of the different types of
warts. It is characterized by warty growths in either or both the genital or anal areas which causes itching and
discharge. It also classified as a “sexually transmitted disease since it can be spread by sexual intercourse.
5. Mosaic warts: This is found in the hands and soles of the feet. It is
different from the other warts in the sense that it grows in clusters.
6. Filiform warts: These are fingerlike growths found on the face usually
around the eyes and lips.
Warts can become embarrassing at times especially when they are found in the more exposed parts
of the body. In old times, it is believed that “witching” and “charming” the different types of warts will make
them go away. Of course these are just stories.
Fortunately, the different types of warts usually disappear on their own. If they persist, there
are various methods, either at home or in the hospital, which can be used to treat them. Be it through surgery or
chemicals, the important factor in these remedies is the disappearance of the warts without leaving any form of
scarring. So even though the different types of warts are infectious, still it is nothing to be
afraid of.
