Familiarizing with the Different Types Of Skin
Moles
Different types of skin moles : A friend of my have two of them in his face,
another has three on her shoulder. You may have four or five on your neck. They usually appear as small pink or
dark brown spots. Some of us have had it at birth. What is it? Moles! Not the animal, of course.
Skin moles, also called melanocytic naevus, appear when pigment cells called melanocytes abnormally appear on the
skin. Because of this they cause a pigmented growth which can either be flat or fleshy. All types of skin moles
appear because of certain genetic factors. They are also caused by too much exposure to the sun. I’ve said earlier
that some of us are born with it and more appear as we reach adulthood. Ultimately, some disappear as we grow
older.
There are many different types of skin moles;
Congenital naevus is a mole that is present at birth. It appears in
one in a hundred babies and it comes in many sizes. Persons who develop this kind of skin mole have an increased
risk of getting melanoma.
Halo naevus is a type of skin mole that occurs most often in children
and teenager. It appears when the skin around an old mole becomes pale which forms a sort of white ring around the
mole thus the term halo.
Of the many types of skin moles, the atypical naevus, also called
Clark’s Naevi, and the dysplastic naevi have the the most unusual features. They
have an indistinct edge and usually come in a bigger size. They have the same characteristics and both are at high
risk of developing into melanoma.
Lastly, there is the blue naevus which is a type of deep-seated skin mole that
is colored blue.
The different types of skin moles start their lives as a flat and junctional type called
junctional naevus, they are located between the dermis and epidermis. After a while, the mole then develops into a
slightly raised growth in the dermis. They are then called intradermal nevus.
All skin moles are not harmful. They only become unsafe when it starts to develop into melanoma,
a type of skin cancer. There’s no need to worry unless you notice some changes in them. Increase in pigmentation or
darkening of the skin mole is one of the indications that it is developing into melanoma. Other symptoms include a
significant increase in size, development of a red halo, sensation of pain in the mole and presence of bleeding and
ulceration.
If you see these changes, see a doctor right away, who knows, it can mean life or death. Some of
these occur to persons who have a family history of cancer and these can be triggered by exposure to ultraviolet
rays. It is also thought the number of moles that a person has is directly related to the chances that he will
acquire melanoma. Luckily, there is a very low risk that a certain kind of mole will evolve into one.
Each one of us has one. We may have all types of skin moles or we may have only one kind. What
matters most is how we take care of it and accept it as a part of our body.
